TUBELESS RIM TAPE

Tubeless rim tape is required for installing a tire on a tubeless rim. The first step before installation is verifying that both the tire and the rim are tubeless compatible. If one or both are not tubeless compatible, trying to set them up tubeless could have dangerous results during the install or later during a ride. Some tubeless wheelsets come with rim tape already installed, but many do not. Almost all individual tubeless rims will not come with tape either.

Many companies make various versions and sizes of tubeless tape. The main difference between them is width. It is important to use tape with a width that matches the inner width of the rim you are using. Using tape that is too wide can lead to folds in the tape which can leak air. Using tape that is to narrow can lead to excess air escaping through spoke holes in the rim. A proper fit it key to having a successful tubeless setup.

For installation, it is important to pull the tape tight during application. Start the tape in front of the valve hole and cover the hole with the tape. To avoid leaks, it is a good idea to wrap the rim at least twice with the tape, covering the valve hole each pass. Make sure the tape is centered inside the rim during installation and avoid as many air bubbles as possible. Once the tape is installed, you will need to puncture a small hole through the valve hole so you can install a tubeless valve stem. The valve stem will create an air tight seal around the hole.
