Road bikes have evolved a tremendous amount and they continue to evolve every year with new Road Lever and Caliper Sets technology. There are many road bikes come with disc brake calipers and drop bar road levers. Hydraulic disc brakes on road bikes require a special road lever that has a brake fluid reservoir built into the top of the lever. These sets typically come as a complete left and right set or are sold as individual left and right sides. They come with the road lever, disc brake caliper, and housing for the brake caliper.
Some of these road levers also double a shifter that works with their respective brand's derailleurs. That means if you're getting Shimano levers, then you'll want to make sure you have Shimano derailleurs that match the speeds of the road lever. Some systems, like SRAM's Force 1, only use one shifter and have another lever without a shift mechanism built in. These are for 1x drivetrains where there is no front derailleur.
Disc brake calipers for road bikes are starting to come in a flat-mount style which means the caliper mounts flush with the frame or fork. These are similar to post-mount brakes but do not use posts and have a countersunk screw. If you're ever in doubt of what Road Lever and Caliper Sets you need, just let our Gear Advisors know.
