Bike Master Links and Pins

Whether you break or bend your chain during a ride, or simply need to remove it to work on your drivetrain, there will eventually come a time when you need to be proficient with bike master links and pins. These handy (and tiny) components allow you to pull your chain apart, and more importantly put it back together.

Most newer bikes have chains equipped with a master link, which is simply a unique link that can be pulled apart and reconnected, usually without the need for tools. But just like you must pick the right chain for your bike, not every master link will work with every chain. The primary consideration is choosing the right speed, be it, 9, 10, 11, or 12. You may also need to get a specific brand and model, for example SRAM’s Powerlock for 12-speed chains. And sometimes you even have a choice in color, which can make it easier to locate the master link once it is installed.

Replacement chain pins can also help you get out of a jam or make doing maintenance easier. These are used with chains that do not have a bike master link. Instead you use a chain breaking tool to pop out one of your chain’s existing pins (thus breaking the chain) and then push in a replacement pin when you are ready to reconnect and start riding again.
